How can I tell if my car is a M57 powered diesel BMW?
The BMW M57 engine, a durable and efficient inline-6 diesel, was utilized in a select range of models for the U.S. market. While the most commonly known models include the 2009-2013 BMW X5 E70 35d and the 2009-2011 BMW 335d E90, the overall presence of the M57 in the U.S. is relatively limited compared to Europe due to the American market's traditionally lower demand for diesel passenger vehicles. Below is a list of BMW models that were equipped with the M57 engine and officially sold in the United States:
- 2009-2011 BMW 335d (E90): This model was part of the E90 3 Series lineup, offering a blend of performance and efficiency. It featured the M57D30T2 version of the engine, which was known for its robust output and torque.

It's worth noting that while the M57 engine enjoyed popularity in certain models for its fuel efficiency and torque, BMW's diesel vehicle availability in the U.S. has fluctuated due to changing emissions standards, consumer preferences, and corporate strategy towards electrification.
What is a BENCH Flash method and how does it work to install my M57 ECU Tune?
DUDMD's bench flashing method for BMW vehicles, including models like the 335d E90 and the E70 35d, represents a specialized approach to engine tuning and ECU optimization. This process involves directly programming the vehicle's Digital Diesel Electronics (DDE) control unit, which is the heart of the engine's management system. The bench flashing technique is distinct because it requires the DDE to be physically removed from the vehicle and connected to a specialized device that allows for direct, in-depth modifications to the engine's software. Here's a detailed overview of the process:
- Removal of the DDE: The first step involves carefully removing the DDE unit from the vehicle. For models like the 335d E90 and the E70 35d, this means accessing the engine compartment, locating the DDE, and then safely disconnecting it from the vehicle's electrical system.
- Ship ECU / DDE to DUDMD Tuning: Make sure to print the tuning form, fill it out, and ship the filled out form and your ECU / DDE to the address on the form. Make sure you pack it well, and the box is secure. Please save your tracking number, so that you can monitor the shipping status.
- Full Backup: Before making any changes, a complete backup of the DDE's existing software is created. This is a critical step that ensures the original settings and configurations can be restored if needed. The full backup captures all the current parameters, calibrations, and customizations, providing a safety net for the tuning process. This also allows you to clone your DDE / ECU later, if you have any issues with failure of your DDE / ECU in case your have physical damage, water damage, or the common diesel wicking into the DDE issue.
- Bench Flashing Setup: With the DDE removed, it's then connected to a bench flashing device. This device allows DUDMD Tuning to interface directly with the DDE's memory and software. The connection is typically made via the DDE's communication ports, allowing for full access to the unit's programming.
- Programming and Tuning: The actual flashing process involves modifying the software stored on the DDE. This can include changes to fuel maps, boost pressure limits, torque limits, and other critical engine parameters. The goal is to enhance the vehicle's performance, improve fuel efficiency, or achieve a specific tuning objective. The process is done using specialized software that allows DUDMD Tuning to make precise adjustments to the DDE's programming.
- Reinstallation and Final Checks: Once the tuning is complete and verified, the DDE is reinstalled in the vehicle. The final step involves a series of checks to ensure that the DDE is communicating correctly with the vehicle's other systems and that there are no error codes or warning lights displayed.
DUDMD's bench flashing method offers several advantages, by creating a full backup of the DDE's original software, the process ensures that modifications can be reversed if necessary, providing peace of mind for vehicle owners. This approach is particularly appealing for enthusiasts and professionals looking to unlock the full potential of their 335d E90, E70 35d, or other BMW models equipped with the M57 engine and managed by a DDE control unit.
