BMW DME ECU OBD Unlock for OBD2 Tuning - MEVD17 N55 and S55
BMW DME UNLOCK service for OBD2 Tune Flashing offered by DUDMD Tuning.
Most newer BMWs with the later MEVD17 are locked by latest BMW software updates, which prevent tuning software like DUDMD Tuning OBD2 Flasher, MHD, BM3 (Bootmod3) to be installed by the customer via obd2 port. This service will unlock the OBD2 port and allow the DME to be flashed with a tune of your choice. We make a full 100% original DME back up before the unlock, so it can always be restored to original data.
We have a special harness that we built, that allows us to quickly and safely connect to your DME with original OEM connectors. So there's no chance of bent pins or damage to pins, this is very crucial as the MEVD17 DME pins are small and very close together. A lot of cheaper unexperienced companies can damage, bend or break off your pin, or short the pins out if they're not careful. Our special harness we built, not only saves time but also save and protect your DME as well.
For this OBD2 DME UNLOCK service, you will have to send in the original DME. You will need to remove it from your car, place the purchase order here, then print the tuning form. Place the filled out repair form and your DME in a box, and ship it to us for unlock.
If you have any questions, or concerns or want to confirm that we can unlock your DME, please send us an email, and a picture of the ecu stickers.

BMW MEVD17 DME Unlock Service FAQs
What is BMW MEVD17 OBD2 Locked DME?
Q: What does "BMW MEVD17 OBD2 Locked DME" refer to?
A: The term "BMW MEVD17 OBD2 Locked DME" refers to a specific Digital Motor Electronics (DME) control unit used in certain BMW vehicles, which has been locked to prevent OBD2 (On-Board Diagnostics II) port flashing. This locking is a security measure implemented by BMW through software updates to prevent unauthorized modifications to the vehicle's engine management software.
Q: Why did BMW decide to lock the OBD2 flashing ability?
A: BMW introduced the lock on the OBD2 flashing ability through later software updates as a means to enhance the vehicle's security. This decision was primarily aimed at preventing unauthorized access and modifications to the engine's software.
Q: How does the lock affect BMW owners?
A: For owners of BMW vehicles with the MEVD17 DME that has been locked, this means that they cannot easily modify or tune their vehicle's engine management software through the OBD2 port using standard aftermarket tools. Any attempts to flash or modify the DME software must be done through more complex and possibly dealer-exclusive methods, which can limit customization options and potentially increase the cost of such modifications.
Q: Is it possible to unlock the MEVD17 DME for OBD2 flashing?
A: Unlocking a locked MEVD17 DME for OBD2 flashing is a challenging process that typically requires specialized tools and expertise. DUDMD Tuning offers services to unlock these DMEs.
How can I determine if my MEVD17 DME needs to be unlocked?
Q: What indicates that my MEVD17 BMW DME requires an unlock?
A: Determining whether your MEVD17 BMW DME (Digital Motor Electronics) needs an unlock involves a few steps. BMW has implemented locks on later bootloader models to prevent unauthorized OBD2 (On-Board Diagnostics II) flashing. Here's how you can identify if your vehicle's DME is locked:
- Attempted Flashing Fails: If you attempt to flash an OBD2 tune and the process fails or does not complete successfully, it's a strong indication that your DME is locked. This failure is a direct consequence of BMW's security measures to prevent modifications through OBD2 port flashing.
- DME Response to Failed Flashing: While a failed flash attempt due to a lock could potentially damage or "brick" the DME, it is typically possible to restore it back to its original, stock firmware, allowing it to operate normally again. If you've experienced this scenario, it confirms that your DME is indeed locked and requires an unlock before you attempt to flash your tune again.
- Warnings from Tuning Software: Popular tuning software solutions like MHD and BM3 (Bootmod3) are designed to recognize the specific bootloader versions on MEVD17 DMEs. They will typically issue a warning if they detect that your DME's bootloader version is one that requires an unlock before proceeding with the flashing process. This preemptive warning is a clear indication that an unlock is necessary to proceed safely.
Q: What should I do if my DME is locked?
A: If you've determined that your MEVD17 DME is locked and you wish to proceed with tuning or flashing, the next step is to seek a professional unlock service. These services are offered by DUDMD Tuning which is experienced with BMW's specific locking mechanisms. DUDMD Tuning can safely unlock your DME, allowing you to proceed with your desired modifications without risking further damage to the DME.
What is the turn around time for my ECU OBD2 unlock?
Q: How long does it take to unlock my ECU for OBD2 use through DUDMD Tuning?

- Processing Time: DUDMD Tuning prides itself on fast service. Orders that arrive during their operating hours on a business day are typically processed on the same day. This quick processing ensures that your ECU unlock request is handled promptly.
- Return Shipping Time: After your ECU has been unlocked, DUDMD Tuning offers free return shipping using USPS Priority Mail or UPS Ground, which usually takes about 2-4 days. This is the standard option and is included at no extra cost to you.
- Expedited Return Shipping: For customers who need their ECU returned as quickly as possible to minimize vehicle downtime, DUDMD Tuning offers UPS Express Expedited shipping as an option during checkout. This service significantly reduces the return shipping time, getting your unlocked ECU back to you with minimal delay.
Q: What if I need my ECU back as soon as possible?
A: If minimizing downtime is crucial for you, it's recommended to opt for the UPS Express Expedited shipping at checkout. This ensures the fastest return shipping time after your ECU's unlock has been completed.
Q: Are there any potential delays I should be aware of?
A: While DUDMD Tuning ensures prompt processing within their control, it's important to note that they are not responsible for any shipping delays due to weather, carrier issues, or other factors outside of their control. Such delays can impact the overall turnaround time, despite DUDMD Tuning's efficiency in processing orders.
Q: What can I do to avoid delays?
A: To minimize the risk of delays, consider sending your ECU early in the week to avoid weekend holdovers. Choose expedited shipping options for both sending your ECU to DUDMD Tuning and for the return shipment. However, remember that external factors like weather and carrier performance can still influence shipping times, so it's wise to plan accordingly.
Do you back up the DME when doing the OBD2 Flash Unlock?
Q: Is a backup made of the DME during the OBD2 Flash Unlock process?
A: Yes, when performing an OBD2 Flash Unlock, it's a standard procedure for professional tuning services at DUDMD Tuning, to make a full backup of the original data stored in the DME (Digital Motor Electronics), also known as the engine control unit (ECU). This precautionary step is crucial for several reasons.
Q: Why is backing up the BMW DME important?
A: Backing up the BMW DME is important for a few key reasons:
- Restoration Capability: In the event that a full factory restore is needed, the original data can be used to return the DME to its initial state. This is particularly useful if any issues arise during the tuning process or if the vehicle needs to be returned to stock conditions for any reason.
- Cloning Possibility: Should there be a need to clone the DME/ECU in the future, having a backup of the original data is invaluable. This situation could arise if the original DME/ECU experiences a failure and a replacement unit needs to be programmed with the original data.
Q: How is the backup used in the future?
A: The backup serves as a digital fingerprint of the vehicle's original engine management system. It can be utilized to:
- Restore Original Settings: If modifications need to be reversed, the backup allows for a precise restoration to the vehicle's original programming.
- Troubleshooting: In troubleshooting any post-tuning issues, the backup provides a baseline to compare against and diagnose problems accurately.
- Replicate Settings: For vehicles that require a new DME due to damage or failure, the backup can replicate the original settings on a new unit, ensuring a seamless transition.
